Project Details
Bangladesh's steel sector has experienced significant growth, with consumption increasing from 1.6 million metric tons a decade ago to over 7 million metric tons in 2018, and projections of 18 million metric tons by 2030. The sector employs approximately 1 million people and serves the public sector (60%), households (25%), and commercial construction (15%).
Bashundhara Group, a leading conglomerate, is developing Bashundhara Multi-Steel Industries Limited (BMSIL) to meet rising demand. The Phase 2 CSP Plant, located in the Bashundhara Industrial Economic Zone at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar, will use Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology with a Compact Strip Production (CSP) process to produce 2 million metric tons of hot-rolled coil annually.
The plant will operate using scrap and Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) as feedstock, with equipment supplied by SMS Group from Germany and India. The production process will include scrap processing, melting, rolling, and storage. The project aims to reduce import dependence, support infrastructure development, and create employment opportunities, contributing to Bangladesh's industrial growth.
