Central Water Treatment Plant (CWTP) and Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) Project under Bangladesh Special Economic Zone

Project Details

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) with the support of JICA and Bangladesh SEZ Ltd. is developing a Japanese Economic Zone (JEZ) in Araihazar Upazila of Narayanganj District. The Economic Zone (EZ) is known as the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), which was initially named as Araihazar Economic Zone (AEZ). The proposed BSEZ is located adjacent to the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. The total land of BSEZ is approximately 217.57 ha or 537.63 acres for the first phase (Phase-I). The offsite facilities such as gas transmission lines, electrical sub-stations, powerplant etc. are already under construction. For on-site facilities, sand filling and landscaping is currently going on. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have been done and approved by the Department of Environment (DoE) for the entire facility (i.e., BSEZ) including the powerplant, gas transmission, electrical substations, and other off-site facilities. Hence, Bangladesh SEZ Ltd. joint venture of Sumitomo Corporation, Japan, and Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA), intends to construct few specific onsite facilities which requires further clearance from DoE and thus requires an ESIA to be conducted. Of the offsite and onsite facilities, the letter from DoE on EIA approval of the previous EIA for the entire offsite and onsite facilities mentioned, the need of Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and Central Water Treatment Plant (CWTP).
